- Everyone in this room and everyone in this conference is here because we want peace. Peace and justice.
- Malaysia will chart its own course. Boasts of its own legacy of uncommon independence. So oftentimes, where there is courage, truth, compassion, belief in the people and a strong solid sense of right and wrong, there is also aloneness, vulnerability or deep disappointment.
- Come together at this Conference to commune with each other, learn from each other, give love and support, recharge batteries and continue work on what is right in a world currently filled with so much wrong.
- Was asked to endorse activities of American peace-seeking movement called World Can't Wait. Advocating the impeachment of Bush and members of his administration, because in their opinion, the world can't wait. Agrees with them.
- Defeated for the 2nd time by an unsupportive Democratic Party and Republican voters who crossed over. Decided to do what no one would. On the last day in Congress after 12 years of service, advocated impeachment proceedings against George Bush, Vice-President Cheney and Condoleeza Rice.
- Impeachment is constitutional way to handle an Administration that has violated so many tenets of the US Constitution. Also a way of saying that we do not condone what has been done in our name.
- I asked questions. What does the Bush Administration know about 9/11? When did it know? After I lost [the elections] I traveled around the country, supporting anti-war movement and informing people of the lies of the Bush Administration. Film - America's Blackout - tells whole story of how Republicans stole 2 Presidential elections and Republicans stole 2 Congressional elections from me.
- World Did Not Wait - activists are the people practicing the art of effective resistance. Started with Cuba but Cuba is no longer alone in charting its own course. Chavez in Venezuela - using oil profits to set up healthcare, arts programs, subsidized education. People in Cote d'ivore rejected dictatorship. etc. Brazilians elected Workers' Party. Argentina, Spain, India, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua - all elected with one agenda - to provide prosperity, independence, justice, peace - to the people they represent. Haiti - people ensured that their votes counted and their democracy was respected. People who have less that Americans stood up and took their fates in their hands.
- After 9/11 - draconian laws passed, usurped the Declaration of Independence and the civil liberties embodied in the Bill of Rights. Used 9/11 to occupy Iraq and used it as an excuse. Lied to American people and global community. Campaign of terror at home - US Govt targeted Muslim community - actually rounding law-abiding innocent people for interrogation. Medical records, bank records, telephone conversations, emails, regular mail subject to government seizure. Even church sermons, environmentalists and peace groups were monitored.
- Bush administration stole 2004 elections and set stage for attacks of other countries it didn't like. Iran, Syria, North Korea, bombed Somalia. Ethiopia e.g is now a US vassal - part of the Administrations war machine against fellow Africans. Not one thing said is a secret in the US.
- Bobby Kennedy - asked abt US military strike against Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis - said unseemly for a country of the size of the US to use military power against a small country like Cuba.
- On the day before he was murdered Martin Luther King Jr said he was happy that he was living in the second half of the 20th Century as people stand up and say we want to be free.
- 40 years later - we are marginalized because we want to be free. MLK would be proud of people who are standing up but would wonder why people are not voting powers out when they can do so.
- Stolen elections - white paper promised by Colin Powell - we have not received it.
