Muslim Youth's Perspective On War Crimes
Dato' Mukhriz Mahathir

  • Greetings and salutations
  • Asked to talk about - the above topic
  • Difficult for the contemporary Muslim youth on the defensive, and discuss it beyond the realm of the Muslim world
  • Western powers - practice discriminatory policies against the Muslim world - the youths - feel concerned and anxious - the posturing of the US military on Iran - may be attacked in the future
  • Whether the international organizations like ICC, and UN Security Council - will be able to carry out their rule
  • And how Muslims are portrayed post 9/11 media - associated with an aggressive religion, warlike - all the good points of Islam - ignored
  • Self-defense - interpreted as aggression - encouraged by the Quran
  • Approach Islam - vary from society to society - but media - generalize it
  • Related to fundamentalism, terrorism, and rebellion -
  • Thomas Friedman - commented - terrorism, just a tool, are fighting an ideology - of totalitarianism - to destroy Islam
  • Hunt for Osama bin Laden, killings in Iraq, by Israelis à all towards this end
  • Reports of the largest car bombs in Iraq - followed by report of a leisure sport - we are desensitized of the bloodshed in our world today
  • Muslim youth - are affected by the anti-Islam propaganda today
  • Subjected to random checks - in US airports - questioned, deported
  • Cases - reported in the news - European and American Muslims - interrogated and incarcerated by police
  • Youths that are prisoners in their own land resist occupation of their own countries - portrayed as fanatics - led by a lunatic
  • Personal experience - with immigration in Palestine - not going into Israel, but the stamp says "welcome to Israel."
  • Violent groups do exist in the greater Muslim society - has its right wing. Malcolm X - people - sad - just cry, but when angry, bring about change - some in the Muslim community that has turned to violence for change - aggression associated with Islam - Muslim Rebel, Mujahideen, Jihaddist, Insurgents - stereotypes, and generalization - brought about a defensive solidarity everywhere, even in Malaysia
  • When they are oppressed - sense of collective pain and anger - moderate Muslim - do not resort to violent mean, but their opinion of the west - the least moderate - sense of betrayal - especially towards the end of the 20th century
  • Malaysia - as an example - in the past - high respect for the US - its principles of democracy - identified with the American people - being colonized by the British. But not the case today - we do not identify with the US - Malaysian - heterogeneous - appreciate and celebrate it - interested in building relationships with other states, not to occupy those states
  • Never practiced the policy of assimilation, celebrated differences - brings us together - diverse group that is unified under the Malaysian flag
  • Disputes with neighbouring states - dialogue, and perhaps refer to higher international body
  • Report - not widely circulated - Quezon city - series of bombings - attributed to the Muslims of the south of the Philippines, explosion at the hotel room - American in the room, who was putting together a bomb - and he was planting the bombs around the city - not killed - the US embassy - sent two helicopters - rescued the person from the hospital. Mayor of the city - suing the US government - as being responsible for the city-wide bombings
  • Southern Thailand, Iraq, and Palestine - there might be invisible hands involved in these civil strifes - evidence that they can do such things
  • Never underestimate the tenacity, deeds and efforts of these people
  • When we see the US government invading Iraq, crimes of Israel on Palestine and Lebanon, sanctioned by the leader of the free world, of the disfigured babies, and the people died due to economic sanctions - it is an embarrassment to the free world
  • Young people today - are here - want war criminals - go down in history as criminals, not heroes - regardless of their religion
  • Palestine - conflict - about land
  • Iraq conflict - about oil, hegemony and power, Islam is an easy target
  • Line up of speakers and audience - evidence of solidarity of this cause

Would like to hear as many perspectives as possible during the Q&A session - that will help push forward the cause of criminalizing war towards its desired end.
