Mr. Michael Carmichael

Since 1968, Michael Carmichael has been a consultant specializing in progressive politics, public affairs and government relations.  He has worked in five US Democratic presidential campaigns and well over 100 major American political campaigns for federal and state offices.  In 1985, he founded The Oxford Centre for Public Affairs in the United Kingdom.  In 1996, he organised a summit conference of small volume auto manufacturers at Forbes House in London that led to the formation of the Coalition of Small Volume Auto Manufacturers (COSVAM).  In 2003, he became an advisor to Morgan Tsvangirai, President of the Movement for Democratic Change.  In the same year, he founded the Planetary Movement, a non-profit organisation based in the UK and USA.  He regularly appears as a public affairs expert on the BBC, European Business News, ITV, NPR and many European television broadcasts examining American politics and culture.

1969 - 1972
President, Diversified Advertising Associates, directed media for over one hundred Democratic candidates for federal, state and local offices.  Working on behalf of the DNC and the DSCC, advised McGovern for President Campaign to launch a television attack on the Watergate break-in.

1973 - 1975
Consulted with Senator Sam J. Ervin and his political advisors during the Watergate investigation.  Served as Media Director for Rufus Edmisten for Attorney General and Political Consultant for Lloyd Bentsen for US President.

1976
Wrote, produced and directed Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr. television and radio endorsement of Governor James Earl Carter for US President.  Placed the media schedule for this endorsement in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.

1976 - 1984
Designed political strategy for numerous federal and state campaigns and worked with the top ranking political consultants:  Joe Napolitan and Ray Strother.  Supported Gary Hart and Jesse Jackson and worked for the Mondale-Ferraro ticket for US president and vice president.

1985
Moved to Oxford, England to conduct academic research and to establish the Oxford Centre for Public Affairs.

1987 - 1988
Supported Albert Gore for US President in the primaries and the Dukakis-Bentsen ticket in the autumn campaign.

1992
Supported William Jefferson Clinton and Albert Gore for US president and vice president.

1996
Founded COSVAM, The Coalition of Small Volume Auto Manufacturers and campaigned for Clinton-Gore.

2000
Travelled from Midland, Texas to Manhattan to survey and analyse the American electorate for the presidential campaign and to campaign for the Democratic ticket led by Albert Gore.

2001
Delivered a paper, Realm, on British political culture at the EAPC conference, Palermo, Italy.

2002
Delivered the lecture, Defense of the Realm, on British political culture in the war on terror at the IAPC World Conference, Malta. Read his paper, The Future of Political Consultancy, at the EAPC conference, Innsbruck, Austria.  Board Member – European Association of Political Consultants (EAPC).

2003
Appointed advisor to Morgan Tsvangirai, (President of the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe) and founded The Planetary Movement (www.planetarymovement.org).  Appointed to the board of the International Association of Political Consultants (IAPC). Presented a paper "Morgan Tsvangirai & the political culture of Zimbabwe" to the IAPC World Conference, Prague.  Published a paper, "The Crisis in Zimbabwe", in the proceedings of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Foreign Affairs – Eighth Report.  See the document at:

2004
Campaigned for John Kerry for US president and chaired the panel on the US presidential election at the EAPC conference in Istanbul.  Lectured to academic audiences in Milan and Sardinia on The US Presidential Election 2004.

2005
Featured increasingly in the global media as a leading critic of the foreign policy of the Bush administration.  Interviewed on the leading programmes on the BBC and ITV as a spokesman for Democrats Abroad, the official political opposition to the Bush administration.

2006
Will deliver the keynote address to the Public Affairs Conference, Lucerne, Switzerland, sponsored by The Swiss Journalism School and the European Journalism Observatory.
