FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Perdana Global Peace Foundation condemns outright the statement made by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim in an interview with the Wall Street Journal Asia Edition recently that he “supports all efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel. It is totally unacceptable that a Malaysian of his standing should openly support the cause of the Zionists.
Surely “protecting the security of Israel” is not something that can be accepted at face value as Tel Aviv had exploited the principle to commit atrocities and genocide on Palestinians. It is in the principle of protecting its security that Israel had conducted military operations and attacks on Palestinians especially in Gaza and these attacks had continued incessantly. It is also the principle of protecting the security of Israel that the United States had repeatedly vetoed resolutions to censure and punish Tel Aviv for its belligerence on the Palestinians.
We don’t need reminding that Malaysians from all walks of life have shown that they are united in opposing the atrocities committed by Israel on Palestinians. A recent incident was when thousands of fellow Malaysians protested at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on 10 June 2010 for the murderous attack on the Freedom Flotilla by the Israeli Defence Force is testimony to the people’s support for the Palestinian plight. Anwar apparently shared the sentiments of the Malaysians then.
Tel Aviv justified its attack on the Mavi Marmara that killed nine activists and injured dozens of others on board, on grounds that it had to do so to protect its security. There were Malaysian activists on board the Mavi Marmara.
The IDF then proceeded to attack and forcefully board and commandeer the Rachel Corrie, another member of the Freedom Flotilla, which had several Malaysian activists on board. In May 2011, our ship, “The Spirit of Rachel Corrie” carrying sewage pipes for the people of Gaza was attacked in Palestinian waters by the IDF and forced to retreat into Egyptian waters. The reason given by the IDF in committing such militant acts in international waters was that it had to protect the security of Israel.
To the PGPF, anyone who wants to “support all efforts to protect the security of Israel” is abetting, if not outrightly supporting, Israel’s continued genocide of Palestinians and undermining all the efforts of Malaysians to support the Palestinians struggle for sovereignty.
The Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF), formerly Perdana Global Peace Organisation (PGPO), is a first but resolute step in the arduous journey towards global peace, moves towards the single goal of putting an end to war. Its founder, YABhg Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, envisages “a serious, active and sustained struggle against war and for peace”. Sharing and supporting this agenda are world-prominent professionals, intellectuals, authors, statesmen – all passionate advocates of international peace. Together, they have signed the Kuala Lumpur Initiative to Criminalise War.
“The Palestinian struggle is nothing more than a struggle for justice, to which they, as much as everyone else, have a right.” Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, President of PGPF.
