Somalia was declared to be in a state of famine by the United Nations and its effects are still ongoing. The situation was made worse with violent insurgencies and political instability within the country. A meeting was held on Monday, 15 August 2011 between PGPF, Mercy Malaysia and NSTP- Media Prima to discuss the tripartite structure of ‘Tabung Bencana Somalia’.
A press conference was organised at Perdana Leadership Foundation on 17 August 2011 with Tun Dr Mahathir officiating the aid program. Since then PGPF has contributed to this mission of supplying humanitarian and food aid through Mercy Malaysia’s team which has since gone on several missions to Somalia.
In moving forward with the aid program, PGPF is now looking at collaborating further with the people and government of Malaysia to send more aid to the Horn of Africa. In plans is construction of Artesian Wells for a more self-sustaining form of aid in and around Mogadishu. A first for PGPF but nonetheless those involved are as determined as those who persevered during the Spirit of Rachel Corrie mission.
Aid efforts are well received and have full support of Somalia’s Special Envoy to Malaysia His Excellency Mr Salaad Ibrahim. However, the task at hand is not easy as the country is known to be one of the most unstable nations in the world. Therefore, PGPF is seeking all the help it can get so that the project can truly be deemed as collaboration between states, entities and its concerned citizens. A program truly to aid Somalia en masse.
